    Recently, at an arts and crafts show in Fairfield County two women came to my jewelry booth, one was very enthusiastic and started trying on jewelry. Her friend however, was aloof. Finally, she remarked “I guess I’m just not interested in costume jewelry.” Never the pushy salesperson, I nonetheless pointed out that all my pieces are made of sterling and gemstones such as freshwater pearls, jade, citrine, peridot (to name a few)---just like the jewelry one would find in a store. Now she took interest in the jasper bracelet her friend was trying on. I explained that when looking at handcrafted jewelry it was very important to look for quality materials and to also understand that the creation methods and consequent style are unique to each piece.

    Having many pieces of mass-produced jewelry which I like very much and wear—I also recognize that even the high-end retail jeweler is creating for a price point--and they produce thousands of copies!

    This customer and her friend enjoyed trying on more jewelry as we chatted about that and the inspiration for my designs. They both selected some pieces that they will wear often and enjoy.
   The ultimate luxury, we decided, wasn’t a brand name—it was to have and wear a beautiful accessory that no one else in world can own.
